Title: Number of plates in a x4 spring clutch ?
Post by: Matt Brighton on 05 May, 2021, 09:23
Having just replaced and improved my clutch - I was surprised to find "only" the x4 friction plates (and 5 steel) in my 4 spring clutch on my RGS Rep.

I was expecting to find  - and ordered  ;D - x5

On photos and diagrams I often see x5 friction plates

Just want to ascertain this is correct and what clutch I do have as a reference - BTW the pushrod measures 11 and 3/4 inches too ?

I was also considering the  £70 SRM alloy pressure plate as a furthur improvement  -

Thanks for any comments and advice

Matt

Should be 5 bonded and 6 plain.

Some Triumph 500cc dynamo equiped bikes, no cush drive built in the clutch, used a shallower chainwheel and hub which took only 4 and 5. You sometimes find an owner has used these parts converting 6 spring to 4 spring.

If you have the shallower parts you will not get 5 and 6 in.

I have used the SRM pressure plate for many years and would not go back to the pressed steel original.

Hi,
Your rod will probably need cutting if you use the SRM kit.

Best wishes...

I think I must have the shallower basket then.... - I did trial fit the 5th plate but obviously i didnt have a steel at both ends and it looked like adding the steel would over fill the basket - but I do however have a cushioned drive - Odd ???  but it seems to work the engine in mine is a 1958 Super Rocket.

Thanks also for your comment on the SRM P Plate too - I think I shall go ahead and install one

Strange that I have the cush drive but only x4 friction plates tho (scratches head  :) :)

The 1958/59 B31 B33 alternator models used a 4 spring clutch 4 bonded 5 plain and a cush drive in the clutch. Fits the A10 as the OK but might not have enough friction to deal with the 650 without some slip being evident.

Thanks Julian

That would explain the 4 + 5 plate setup then...

Best,

Matt

I went through similar issues with my 4 spring on an A65.
As I recall, the first plate to go on is a thicker plain plate with its own part number and it may need to be forced onto the hub.
There was a small step on the hub.  Here's a photo from mine:

Once I figured that out I had other issues finding the correct springs and finally modified some by cutting to length.
The four spring clutch now works great though!  Very light pull on the lever and shifts smooth!
Good luck!
