Title: C15 sump which way round?
Post by: RobinG on 04 May, 2021, 16:13
Hi chaps. Just did an oil change on my C15. I've always fitted the sump plate with the deeper end of the pressed steel cover plate at the forward end of the engine. (Per the diagram in the BSA service sheets etc.)   But I just noticed that the Rupert  Ratio book says to fit it the other way round. (Deepest at the rear).  What's the consensus on which is correct?

Regards, Robin

Not sure of what BSA recommended, but I would always have the deeper end under the oil pick up tube.  TBH though, I always replace the tin plate one with a billet or cast aluminium one which has a drain plug with magnet fitted. It just makes draining a wet sump so much easier.. HTH

Good point. Thanks Ian.
May also follow your lead and fit one with a plug and magnet.

+1 for fitting a plate with drain plug!

Hi,
I fitted mine with the deeper end to the front to give a level bottom to the sump and I also modified it before fitting by adding a drain plug. Just drilled a hoie, welded on a nut and used a short bolt and fibre washer (as per picture).

That's a neat idea Colin.

As an aside, I fitted some small neodymium ring magnets onto the oil level tube/drain bolt thing to hopefully catch any metallic bits floating around.
