Hi
went out today for a ride on my RGS rep and around to and county roads it was fine
but when I was on the main dual carriage way the AMP gauge was as far over to the plus
side as it would go, soon as I come off to the county roads it drops done again, it is fitted
with an elec box but how do I find out how to check that its all ok as I dont want to cook
over my battery .....but as I say looking at that AMP gauge as far over + as it can go do worry
me a Bit, Any idea's.
Cheers Mo
oh round the cuunrty roads was about 50 mph and the open road was about 75 to 75 mph
It will drop as the speed goes down as the dynamo is putting less out. If you are running with the chain drive and are on 12 volt it won't fully charge until the revs go up quite high. Is the battery good? If there is low resistance in the battery the regulator will think it's flat and will increase the charge rate. Of course worse case the regulator is faulty.
Could be poor connections in the charging circuit.
Could you temporarily fit a voltmeter to the battery, to see what voltage is appearing there at high revs?
Hi Guy`s
I have checked the connections and all seem fine but I will have to check out with a volt meter on the battery to make sure it is Not getting to high a currant going in to it.....also I replaced the dynamo chain with a belt drive and it has the 12 volt charging system on with the electronic Reg box so I will check them all out over the next week or so....Thanks for the heads up
Mo
Hi,
The dynamo belt drive conversion can have 10% or 20% ratio gain depending on which system you have.
Rather than a voltmeter a small clip on ammeter would be a good investment for current fault finding and to check your meters calibration.

Best wishes...
I had an electronic regulator last year that stopped regulating, causing the dynamo to put out full power regardless of the battery charge. This condition fried the dynamo armature before I could determine what was happening.
Check if the dynamo is getting very hot. If yes, check the regulator. On my 6v system I applied 7+ volts to the power side of the regulator and then measured the output to the field coil. It was still giving full power (7+volts) to the field coil, therefore not regulating.
Jim
thanks everyone
Now what is the best BSA A10 12 v Positive earth electronic voltage regulator to use just in case I need to get one ?
and where is the best place to get one from Please ;D
My opinion the DVR2 is the best.
https://dynamoregulators.com/dvr2.php
Thanks Julian
I dont even know what one is one there but I will be checking that out
Cheers Mo
If you are going to buy a new regulator you might as well change to negative earth. You can then avail yourself of a better selection of LED bulbs if you want to give the dynamo an easier time.
Hi idie
thanks but I have already fitted LED Bulbs and work fine
Hi all
I have taken Julians advice and went for the one he suggested.
if I get the picture to load you will see that this one whats on my bike has No name
or any kind of makings on it and when I took the cover off it is just filled with Black gunk
so can`t even get to the components anyway ......
Hi,
It looks like a JG 12v regulator from the '70s. State of the art at the time. I do not know if the maker is still about or how to test it.
Dave.
Yes a JG unit. still supplied by Dave Lindsley;
http://www.davelindsley.co.uk/
I used one on my A10 for many years. Last year the charge rate went up quite significantly, obviously on the blink, so I changed to the DVR2.
The JG required some connections to be changed at the dynamo end so if replaced with a different unit you would need to ensure the connections are correct for it.
Below the JG fitting and testing instructions.
are ok well the new DVR2 is now on it`s way...........
so do you know how and what the changes are to be done exactly as I took the bike on Not knowing any of the changes let alone the the parts use like the JG unit you have said is fitted to the bike, so I have NOT got a clue as how to put the new DVR2 on...as I don`t want to blow anything like the new unit or the Dynamo Etc......
so anything that you can tell me what to do would be great
?
Cheers Mo
Hi Julians
well the DVR2 came today what you suggested thank you , so I have taken the end cap off the Dynamo and this is what I have got, and you said that you think that there was something that they changed to use the JG regulator, so if you look at the pictures is there anything that need to be changed as the yellow and the Green on the DVR2 is ok and connected them under the seat to the new DVR2 unit but I just need to Know do I have to change anything or wires in the Dynamo or leave as is ?
Cheers Mo
At the moment your dynamo is wired for the JG, with one end of the field coil connected to the F terminal and the other end connected to the D terminal.
You need to remove the field coil connection from D and connect it to earth. So the connections look like the diagram on the DVR2 instructions.
You might want check it is correctly polarised to make sure it is charging the right way. This is a good source of dynamo information;
https://www.matchlessclueless.com/
I would renew the yellow and green output cables, looks like some damage?
Photo shows my A10 dynamo connections.
Thanks
I am not affray with all the Dynamo wires as to me there seems to be a lot going on in there, so can you put it in layman's terms
for me :P which of them wires on mine do I need to do something with as yours seem different to mine.....I don't want to get it wrong if you know what I mean.
and yes I can see what you mean about the green and yellow wires :'(
sorry if I seem to be a bit lame on this but I have not had anything to do with Dynamo's Before :-*
It is best to remove the dynamo from the bike because there is just not enough space to change the field coil connection with it in place. With the dynamo off you will also be able to clean the commutator which looks a bit black. It will also make it easier to see what is going on with the connections.
So if it was my bike I would disconnect the output green and yellow cables and remove the dynamo from the bike. Having done that I would remove the 2 brushes, clean them off with a cloth and WD40 and clean the commutator and put the brushes back.
The field coil leads are the 2 which come from inside the body. Remove the one connected to D and connect it to earth using the same earthing point as the brush.
A good way to check the polarisation is to motor the dynamo. If checking mine I mount it carefully in a vice with soft jaws. Bridge the D and F and connect the battery negative to the link (presuming positive earth on you bike) Connect a wire to battery positive and touch the end to the dynamo body. Just for a few seconds. If correctly polarised it will motor anticlockwise viewed from the drive sprocket end. If it motors the wrong way swap the field coil connections and try it again.
When done just refit and connect to the DVR2 as the instructions.
I can understand what you are saying, but will he. It's difficult to explain the working of a dynamo to some one who hasn't played with one before.
Hi Mo goldie,
Where about do you live? There could be a BSAOC Branch not too far away. If you are a BSAOC Member the details are in The Star. As most Branches are getting back to having meetings you will probably find that there is someone who will help you.
Dave.
Thanks Julian
I was not wanting to take the cover off again to take the Dynamo off but so be it I will have to do just that :o
but I now understand what you mean so that I will do when I get a new gasket at some point :'( Must be about the 5th time I have,
Hi Dave yes I am a Member but there is No one around near me as Ipswich is No mans land for BSAOC members :P
But I will get it sorted out thanks all for your help.
Mo
If I may jump on this thread???
I have one of these JG regulators fitted to my bike? 1954 golden flash
Put anew battery on in the week as old one won't hold a charge, perfect until had to use lights one evening(about an hour ride) lights working perfect got home battery dead?!
Checked voltage at battery 8 to 9 volts ? No current draw through battery even with lights on? (Engine running separate voltage and amp meters)
Put old battery on and showing discharge at tick over with lights on and when revs taken up going to about 1/2 amp. (Same with lights off), so assuming either new battery just died or regulator cooked it.
New battery will now not charge!
Dead battery or regulator any thoughts.?
Lights work fine without battery connected (obviously with engine running)
Kev
If the regulator had cooked the battery it would have blown all the bulbs a 6 volt dynamo working as 12 volt will easily push out 20 volts the battery would swell and smell of bad eggs. If your new battery had been banged in the past it can easily lose a connection on one of the bridging bars this will give a open circuit and no output
Thanks Idie.
Took battery back they are checking hopefully replacement on its way?
Hi all
well here is an update of what I have done and the first thing to say is it is Not charging,
I have done to the letter what Julian said, first of I did take the Dynamo right off the bike
then I striped down all the parts on the board to clean everything up then I changed all the wires as per
told and ended up running the Dynamo as a motor and it worked fine other that it was going clockwise
so reversed the field wires and the run it up again and all good as it was then going anti clockwise,
so after that all back together and I checked the wires the green to F and the yellow to D..... connected
the wires up at the DVR2 end as per their instructions so already to go started bike up and amp gauge
did not shown anything so put all the lights on and it went to the – side and when revved it did not go up
so put a meter on that battery and the Voltage was a constant 12.6 Volts.
so I took the cap of the Dynamo and checked the wiring again all ok so put a meter on the D and F and run bike
up it was giving out 10 volts as soon as I revved it to no more that 2,000 rev`s it went to 20 volts.....so al I can say
is that is where I and up to...where do I go from here......or is it the New DVR2 or something else ?
Cheers Mo
Check that the regulator wires are properly connected. I fitted a new regulator on my A10 and the first times I connect it it just blew the fuse. Checking the wiring diagram supplied with the regulator I realised that the green and yellow wires were back to front. I then connected it up use basic electrical logic and the bike's wiring diagram. This involved connecting the green wire from the regulator to the yellow wire on the bike wiring and vice versa. This should have resulted in a burnt out regulator but instead all the electrics settled down and all is now running well. The regulator must have been incorrectly wired at the factory - by the way the regulator I bought was the correct polarity- allegedly.
Is you have 20 volts from the dynamo then there is nothing wrong with it. Have you re polarized it. With the dynamo on the bike flash the field wire to the live on the battery, this will re polarize it.
Hi I have checked all the wires and as I say the battery voltage stays the same so checked what was coming out of the Dynamo and I think all good, so you are thinking they have wired the box round the wrong way then,,,,,,, its just that if I put the green to yellow and the same with the yellow and green the other way round.......if its wrong will it damage the regulator ?
Hi Mo,
Just a suggestion but if you are concerned about the DVR2 contact Mike at Dynamo Regulators Ltd. I am sure he will be able to help. At bit of a long shot but is the DVR2 for 12v ie white wire not connected.
Dave.
Try testing the dynamo output at the DVR2 end of the F and D wires, if you have output there test the output from the DVR2 brown output wire.
Hi
yes I did contact him and had a chat and done a few things, but still no joy......but then in my moment of madness I had put my Fluke meter on the wrong setting so when i thought the Dynamo was pushing out 21 volts it is not it is 2.1 volts :'(
so it seems as the Dynamo is something wrong so any suggestions on why this is not sending out a good voltage ?
as I say I have followed to the letter I even just checked the way it was turning and from the nearside of the bike it is turning clockwise so the timing cover side it is then turning anti clockwise so that is right, and as I said I run it up like a motor ad the field coils must be right as this turned it anti clockwise.... so any more help please would be great.....its getting a bit on my nerves Now ;D
Cheers Mo
If you have dismantled the dynamo. Have a look at the armature behind the copper segments has it thrown solder. If it has overheated it will throw the solder off from where the windings join the segments. Check resistance across the two field winding leads should be about 2 ohms. Check resistance across a joining copper segments on the armature should be 1 ohm if no resistance then open circuit on windings. Armature is then scrap.
Well I have done all that I can....I checked out the ohm`s and that was 3.4 across the field coils so I had a look at the windings and could not see any signs of solder flying about so I took it all off the bike again double check everything that I had done so fused the F & D and run it up again like a motor which worked fine so I gave up..... I found an Auto Electrician firm near by and I have just said can they check it out, he told me to come back tomorrow but he said they do not have any parts and I would have to send it away to be done, he suspect it is the Armature and he gave me some bull story that it would cost somewhere around £800 ....anything to make Money out of us poor old bikers ha ;D
so that is where I am at the moment............ don't know what else to do...as if it is well bang go`s the bike on the road for a long while ha.
Cheers all Mo
Hi Mo,
Are you in the UK? Try Priory Magnetos Ltd.
Dave.
Hi Dave yeah I will when I get it back thanks
well I got it back today and they said they could do nothing with it.......thats if they tried that is :'(
So I got on to a guy called Paul Dunn he seems to think it is still wired up wrong and he said if I send it to him he will check it out so that is where it has gone so hope all will be well when it comes back,,,,Mind you I did miss the last post of the day so wont go off now till Monday :'(
https://sites.google.com/site/dynamosdynamos/
I use AO regulators on every upgrade I do.
Hi guys
Well I got the Dynamo back yesterday afternoon and I can Now say that Paul Dunn did a great job on it,
now all fitted and it all works a treat the AMP Gauge now reads on the first part of the + scale when riding along
with all the lights on so I can also say thanks julians for the tip for the regulator as that is doing its job well too..... so I hope that everything keeps going fine, as I was out one the Bike today and went for a 40 mile ride and she went a treat. ;D
Cheers Mo
