Title: D1 charging fault
Post by: robincroft on 22 Apr, 2021, 19:03
Hello,

I am currently trying to sort a charging problem with a D1 (1953)
The bike starts and runs well with everything working.
However, the Lucas alternator is not topping up the battery.
I have checked for loose wires and poor contacts, all seems well. The rectifier is a solid state.
Using the BSA service sheet no. 812 I tested the outputs when the engine was running and with lights on, alas the required voltages were not met by a long chalk.
What I would like to know amongst any other tips is whether these alternators can be serviced and if so who by? If not, is there a modern replacement?
Thanks for reading.
Robin

Hi,
Try Villiers Services.  They do a refurb' and can include re-magnetising the flywheel for the Wipac system, may also do the Lucas?
Regards.
