Title: Rims and spokes
Post by: MJM_58SR on 16 Apr, 2021, 21:32
I thought I'd share an experience I had recently with stainless rims and spokes. I decided to change as part of a refresh.
I've got cast iron FW rear and 7" TLS front. So I ordered the parts from Devon Rim who advertise the correct and to original spec.
Anyway they came and I started to fit them up a couple of weeks ago, only to find the TLS spokes don't fit. I spoke to Shaun the MD who had asked to discuss the issue with me. So I gave him the full details and angle of what I wanted but TBH he wasn't that helpful really and didn't want to know. He was pleasant enough but I sensed that if I had challenged it would have become unpleasant and I wasn't prepared to go there. He listened for a few minutes but then insisted that they had sold hundreds, he had built hundreds and the spokes were correct, they just needed a tap with a plastic mallet to bend them over! Apparently ALL wheel builders do that with spokes...
He also said that he had never seen spokes bent at the 78 deg angle that I was asking for and said the spokes I had sent a photo of to him had been modified.
Anyway I called central wheel components and they were easier to talk to, upshot is I sent a pattern of what I wanted and they came back today correctly bent and only a week turnaround. Good quality too.
So just a heads up that if you are buying from Devin Rim buyer beware as they send 90 deg bends instead of 78 deg for the 10 outers on the brake side.
I'm not saying that there quality isn't good, i got valtru rims which seem pretty good, they polish up nice. I bought rolltru spokes to go with them and they seem good too apart from the wrong angle on the one set.
In my experience after dealing with both Devon Rim and Central wheel components, I won't be buying again from Devon Rim because of the poor after sales experience and the attitude of the MD, they could easily rectify that issue but chose not to take the feedback on board.

Interesting stuff. I had similar, several years ago with a set of rims and spokes for a conical hub A65, but parts came from Fecked. Just could not build the wheels as the spokes were not fitting the rim correctly. The rims were not drilled/punched at the correct angles.
Obtained replacements from Central Wheels and perfect.
Never gone anywhere else since. Except the wheels that I have now for a Honda 400 four. All parts from David Silver, so don't expect a problem
