Title: Plunger clutch movement
Post by: Captain Mike on 08 Apr, 2021, 09:23
HI All

I recently changed the primary chain cover gasket on my 1957 Plunger A10 and realised there was significant play on the clutch, IE wobbly lateral movement , this alarmed me so I stripped the clutch to inspect,  it seems that every thing in there is correct and not worn, however there is play between the splined drive shaft and the clutch centre that fits over it , nothing looks chewed up and I believe it has had new plates
After searching for information it seems that the play / clearances between the clutch splined drive shaft and the clutch  centre could possibly be normal

Has anybody got any movement / clearance / measurement advice for these components ? I am looking to put it all back together and see how it goes, however it seems a lot of play, having said that I had a 1939 rover that said 1/2 play on the steering was acceptable ? that's why you see guys driving cars in the old movies constantly moving the steering wheel to go in a straight line !

any advice will be appreciated

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike,

The centre may be a bit worn considering how many miles these may have done in the past.  Is the play just rotational or can the centre be rocked on the shaft?  Also, does it get less when the nut is tightened up?
Often much of the wobble goes when the clutch is fully assembled.

Dave.

Thanks Dave

I have mounted the clutch centre on the drive shaft and there is play, however nothing looks worn, what i am trying to establish what the play should be between these two components, from what I have researched it seems there is a lot of play anyway when it is all together, just not sure how much is acceptable I will carry on researching a bit before I put it back together again
