Title: BSA Brake unknown
Post by: charlottevictoria on 05 Apr, 2021, 10:10
Hello specialists,

I 've bought an NSU OSL 1935 which contains some BSA parts inside the engine and the front Brake.

Could anybody tell me, from which BSA model and year does the brake come?
I am not able to open the brake. Could anybody give me an idea, how to look inside the brake?
I have to replace the screw which fixes the breaking armature because the thread is damaged.

Thank you very much
Peter

Hi,
    Welcome to the forum.

until now it's not possible to separate the brake plate 67-555 from the spindle spacer 67-5565

Hi,
Looking at the image you posted:

Remove the spindle nut.
Disconnect the torque arm.
Support the bike in case it drops forward when the wheel is removed.
Unscrew the wheel spindle.
Remove the wheel.
Place the wheel flat on the ground, brake up.
Wiggle and pull the brake plate up and out.
If it seems stuck move the brake lever arm to release the brake shoes from the drum.

Best wishes...

Hi,
brake plate 67-555 and spindle spacer 67-5565 should be a sliding fit. Clean around the area with a wire brush to remove any corrosion, file off any burrs from the spacer. Use some heat on the alloy from boiling hot water and or a small amount of release oil being careful not to get the oil inside the drum and onto the brake linings.

Best wishes...

As it is a standard 8 inch BSA brake there should be a sleeve that come through the brake plate. Normally the sleeve projects from the brake plate about 1/2 inch to engage in a hole in the bottom of the tele forks. I think you will find that this is cut off level with the brake plate. I had to do this when I fitted  such a brake into my BSA girder forks. the sleeve is pushed into position by the wheel spindle this sleeve can size in the alloy brake plate. Just tap it back, don't worry if it disappears into the bearing as the spindle will locate it and push it back when you reassemble.

thank You very much - it worked to remove the break plate by using some heat.
