Title: Clutch hub screws
Post by: Phil C on 23 Mar, 2021, 20:39
Evening everybody, Please could you give your opinions on this: Rupert Ratio (vol.1, p.119) says, about the four countersunk  hub screws: "once inserted these may need 1/16" removing from the end before centre punching to prevent loosening." I guess that's okay until such time as you might want to dismantle it. What do you reckon? How necessary is it to centre punch them?  Phil

Hi Phil,

The last thing you want is for these screws to loosen.  At best it will interfere with the action of the clutch to the point were it will not work and at worst they could contact moving parts and cause major damage.
Better to have them guaranteed secure than come loose.  If the shock absorber rubbers are in good order or are being renewed then you will not have to undo them for a long time if ever.

Dave.

Okay thanks very much Dave. I renewed the rubbers about two years ago and have done very few miles since then. So  I'll cut (probably junior hacksaw or dremmel) them to about, say, 1mm ( if they are longer than that) of the surface, and centre pop them. Phil

Hi Phil,
Looks like BSA updated their procedures:
