Not that I'm planning to dismantle my (1965 B40F) forks anytime soon, but I'm just trying to get my head round the very basics of how they work. As I understand the basics, there are the fork legs (sliders); sliding inside the legs are stanchions (tubes), with bushes top and bottom to ensure they are a nice sliding fit in the legs; and then there are the springs, which I think are inside the stanchions? Is all that correct? Where are the springs fixed and what to they butt against to compress when the forks are depressed? Phil
The springs are outside of the stanchions. They sit in the chrome oil seal holders and butt up to the bottom yoke under the cover.
Thanks idie. So have I got this right: the springs are only in the top half of the forks, stopped at one end by the bottom yoke and at the other end by what? The oil seal holder? When the forks are depressed, the spring contracts, and the stanchion moves down inside the sliders (legs.) Is that right, and if so could you it someone clarify what the bottom of the spring butts against? Thanks very much. Phil
Re my previous post, please delete "it". Don't know where that came from. Predictive text I guess. Phil
The spring sits in the oil seal holder. Inside is a coller the spring sits on that. On the reverse of the coller is a oil seal, this stop the damping oil in the fork legs from being pumped out when the forks are in operation.
Thanks idie. What's the purpose of the stanchion, other than presumably to support the spring? Phil
That is like asking what is the purpose of the bones in your leg. The stanchion is attached to the top yoke clamped by the bottom yoke. there is a spring between the bottom yoke and the fork legs. The legs have a bush in the top for the stachion to slide through and a bush attached to the lower part of the stanchion which slides up and down the fork leg when the forks are depressed. If you do not understand the working of tele forks go on line and look for a sectioned view which will help your understanding.
I think I get it. Thanks again.
It's not easy when you cannot see inside. If you need more info PM me with your email address and I will photograph the component parts and send them to you.
I don't actually need the info, as I'm not planning to try to strip the forks in the near future, so I wouldn't want you to go to any trouble. I'm just very interested. Phil
Unless of course you're bored, in which case the photos might be extremely useful if and when I get round to it...
