Title: A65 Engine oil type.
Post by: Toolbox on 20 Mar, 2021, 12:33
Thanks all for any opinions.
Not long bought an A65L that's been in nice storage for a while. (not a barn find)

Before I ride and really use the beauty I plan a major service - but what engine oil would the group recommend? I'm tempted to go fully synthetic - any comments to that or should I just stick with a mineral oil?

Any observations / experiences welcomed!

Cheers.

Hi,
I would suggest investigating what oil has been used in the engine previously, if it matches the manufactures specification continue using it until the next major overhaul. A modern oil has a tendency to clean the engine internals including seals which may result in blocked oilways and leaks.

Best wishes...

For what it's worth, I've just fitted an SRM oil pump to my Lightning and on their recommendation I'm Silkolene 40 grade oil. Not done enough running yet to provide any feedback, but they've worked on more of these engines than I've had hot dinners, so I'm happy to go along with them.

On my first Lightning back in the 60's I used to use either Duckhams 20 50 or Valvoline and it didn't seem to suffer any ill effects.

I ran Castrol Gtx and Gtz in my Lightning during the 70's. Worked very well.

I use this, recommended by a classic bike builder.

Silkolene Classic Silkolube 20W-50 20W50 Mineral Engine
