Title: Billet rods worth it?
Post by: Dibble on 18 Mar, 2021, 11:18
looking at my 55yr old con rods when just about to start a engine rebuilt set me thinking. Its a mighty risk after all that investment both time and parts tojust reuse andhope. The obvious choice for many would be billet,SRM possibly, but the cost! Another upgrade and somewhat cheaper too are the steel capped variety. Ultimately its my choice, and thats where this forum proves its worth, a wealth of knowledge and expertise at your fingertips! Well gents whats your view? Any recommendations would be most welcome. Right wheres that credit card!   Thanks.  Dave

the chap in the next unit to my old one used to race Frazer Nash and Becke cars, he had his billet rods made by Carillo in America, but then we are talking about a man who wins championships and "modernises" 1930's race cars and could afford it. I have or had in my unit 4 billet rods for an Ariel Square four , but I dont know who made them so have not used them,
cost is the factor, do you use the bike enough to justify? I know I dont..

regarding the sq4 rods, I consulted with my learned friend next door and although he agreed looked good, the fact there was no material certificate or marking it was a choice only I could make.

I don't think the age is a problem itself but the miles implied by the age could be. Aluminum rods are vulnarable to fatigue cracks after a number of load cycles but there must be a microcrack to develop into a disaster. Unless there is lock up due to big end bearing failure (lack of lubrication?) or load from excessive rpm you could be fine with polishing your rods so eliminating any microcracks at the surface. In mho.

Thats a good point regarding milage etc. The one thing i am certain of with this particular machine ( 67 hornet ) is that it must have had a rough life if the level of mechanical skill demonstrated is anything to go by! Polishing i'd not thought of,it's a possible for sure. Can any one recommend a company suitable ? Thanks for the advice chaps please keep it coming! What a great forum!! Dave

Given a degree of patience and a rainy day you could do them yourself.... It might also be worth considering shot peening them afterwards; this compresses the outer surface of the metal, strengthening and stress relieving the surface.

Have a look at Thunder Rods. Not sure if he does them for BSA's I have used them on Triumphs and they are fabulous quality.
