Title: 1965 C15 Electrics and Spark
Post by: courtney on 17 Mar, 2021, 14:16
Hello,

I have a couple of issues  and queries with my 1965 C15 that I hope someone can assist me with.

I have replaced the wiring loom with a new one, so we know for starters the wiring is good and, more importantly, all the wires are the right colour! The wires were also all labelled up correctly.

I have converted it to 12v with a new 12v coil and 3-phase regulator rectifier, as well as a new set of points and condensor. Bulbs have also been swapped for 12v variants all round. I have swapped the handlebar switch for a new Ducon type as the one fitted when I got it was not correct.

With regards to the new regulator rectifier; I have joined the green/yellow and green/black from the alternator to one of the yellow wires from the reg/rec. The green/white from the alternator is joined to the other yellow wire from the reg/rec. These are connected directly from the alternator. The red wire from the reg/rec. goes to earth and the black wire is joined to the purple wire that once went to the old rectifier.

The wires that went to the original rectifier are purple, light green and 2 dark green joined together. They all had spade connectors, but the purple one has a bullet that I've swapped. The 2 dark green and light green are redundant. Also, where the connectors labelled for the alternator wires on the main harness are redundant and don't have anything in them. I'm concerned about the other dark green wire as this goes to the headlamp rotary switch, shown as number 7 on the diagram.

When I went to connect the battery the horn sounded constantly, which made me jump. I disconnected this for the time being. The only other thing working is the pilot light - no headlight bulb or tail light.

Does my lights not working have anything to do with the other dark green wire at number 7?
If so, how do I wire this?
What could be the issue with the horn? The switch was wired up correctly, but does it differ from an original ducon switch in any way with the way it's earthed or do I need to alter something?

I also wanted to see if I could get the bike started at least, even without lights. Unfortunately, I wasn't getting a spark. I did have a bit of a nightmare and some confusion setting the timing and arranging the points plate, but thought I got it.

Would this affect the spark or mean there is no spark, perhaps if the points are not contacting? I did clean up the earths too.

Hopefully someone can help and confirm things for me. I have the Rupert books, but sometimes it just helps when someone makes something clear in a different way. I just want to get the bloody thing running! Thanks in advance.

A threephase regulator seems inappropriate if you do not have a threepase alternator. Does the manufacturer say it will work?

If the regulator doesn't have some capacitor or inless you have a dedicated capacitor the bike is unlikely to snart if the battery is disconnected.

You're correct. It's a single phase one. It's one of these.

I would try a fully charged battery only connected to coil and points to check if there is a spark and a running engine. After establishing that work with the rest of the wiring.

Many thanks.

Is anybody able to please confirm how to change the wiring if upgrading to 12 volt using a single phase reg/rec?

I'm certain this is the issue. If you have pictures, even better!

Many thanks.

Hello,

I'm confused by the wiring diagrams for converting to 12v. I've got the Rupert book, but any help and pointers for someone that's one this would be appreciated.

Do I need to alter any of the wiring from the ignition switch or light switch on the headlight shell?

Many thanks
