Stripping down my OIF 1971 Firebird to redo the frame and fastenings etc. Got to the point of taking the engine out.
Does any one know if its possible to remove the engine as a complete lump? I dont really want to go disturbing the head and barrel.
Secondly were the buts and bolts zinc plated or cadmium plated in 1971?
Going to go back to her original colour- Dove Grey.
I have never removed an engine from a firebird, but I have removed engines from other bikes. I have found the easiest way is to lay the bike on its side and lift the frame off the engine, it's a lot easier to manage that way
Thanks for that, it makes a lot of sense. I think they must be dimensionally the same as all A65's. Thats good news then.
Engine removal really easy when the frame and engine laid over on the LHS. Putting in was just the reversal but with another pair of hands. Bike now complete, just need an oil gauze filter and RHS folding footrest.
Great looking bike Pete. :)
I have recently finished a full rebuild on a 1971 Firebird and also went to Dove Grey. I am not sure why it was disliked so much at the time. The whole rebuild is on Youtube starting here if it is of any interest..https://youtu.be/2-32liEDXWY
I've just put the engine in a '71 Lightning in one piece installing it into a complete rolling chassis vertically (as it were) but had to remove various bits that stick out and the rocker box cover. Quite awkward so easier on its side as per other comments here. It can be done but better avoided if possible.

I'm with you. Maybe it's a current fashion, everything going full circle, but I see a lot of white or light frames lately. Includes my current Choppa project in "Wimbledon White".
Just read your posts and you mention a little bit about the FIREBIRD.
