Hi to you all again.
Stage 2
All oil has been changed, sump plate back on, feed and return pipes connected. My question is, how long should I expect before the oil returns to the tank? I am worried about possible damage. Had it ticking over for about 1 to 2min with no oil returning. I have also loosened the rocker feeds and the one below. I assume this is good to do?
The feed and return pipes where disconnected for a day or two, so would have emptied out. Just to confirm the feed pipe from the tank connects to the inside connection closest to the engine, and has the longer connector with a none return valve inside.

Has the engine been completely rebuilt with oil pump out or was it running okay and oil pump has not been disturbed ?
Pete
Hi
It had been rebuilt by previous owner and working as it was when it came to me. I have just changed the oil and looked things over. There was plenty returning before.
Have you tried holding your finger over the return pipe hole for a while, when the engine is running, sometimes it just needs a purge.

if it has a wet sump valve fitted it must be primed otherwise no oil flow
It will take a while for sufficient oil to be pumped in and through the engine to fall to the sump.
From there its pumped in the return side of the pump back to the tank.
So it will take some time for enough oil to collect in the sump to be then pumped and seen returning to the tank. Some might pour 1/4 pint of oil into one of the pushrod inspection covers so that it will collect in the sump. I know R3 triple owners get paranoid about oil flow and often prime the sump this way. I'm pretty sure the outer more accessible oil pipe is the return. I seem to remember the crankcase is stamped 'return' next to it,- check yours to see.

Thanks all makes sense.
The last time I started a rebuilt motorcycle engine I took it to the top of a very tall hill in my pickup. Then I took out the spark plugs and coasted it, not running and in gear to the bottom. I'm glad I did because no oil came out and I was able to correct the problem without running the engine.
Hi.
Oil went in pushrod tube to prime the pump, and oil is now flooding in the tank so thanks to all.
Barry.
