Title: B33 plunger gearchange
Post by: Greenfield on 03 Mar, 2021, 15:04
Continuing my quest to improve my green credentials by reducing the amount of oil I leave on the road, I have removed the outer gearbox cover to change the gasket. I notice that the gearchange quadrant nut 2-1813 is loose. The locking washer is present and will prevent the nut unscrewing, but shouldn't the nut be tight before locking with the washer?
Secondly is there a recommended method to adjust the length of the gearchange control rod?

Hi,
I would tighten the nut then fold the lock washer.

Hopefully you wont need to adjust the gear control link adjuster, if you do:

In neutral, looking in the gearbox inspection hatch.
Lift the gear change up selecting 1st (turn the gears if need) and check inside.
Push down through neutral selecting 2nd.
Push down selecting 3rd.
Push down selecting 4th.
Return to 1st through all the gearing checking through the inspection hatch.

If problems are experienced disconnect the gear control link and adjust its length, 1 turn at a time one way or the other repeating the above until it works.

Best wishes...

Thanks Bess. 'On the bench' the gear change is positive, but I can find a false neutral between 3rd and 4th. A turn either way on the adjuster didn't seem to make any difference. Probably down to general wear. I'll see how it goes on the road before a complete strip down.
Cheers

Hi,
There is often that false neutral which can be cured with perseverance.

Best wishes...
