Title: 1965 A65 Lightning instrument removal.
Post by: geraldhattrick75 on 03 Mar, 2021, 10:01
How to remove the speedo and tacho from the alloy mount (68- 9140), so I can clean up/ polish it- please?

Secondly, is there a procedure for fitting the mounting rubbers  68- 9138 around the instruments when refitting- please?

Many thanks, Dave.

Hi Dave,
I disconnect the trip mileage thumbscrew, cables and pull lamp holders out of the casing. The rubbers act like a grommet capturing the instrument rim. From underneath the instruments carefully manually push them up, one hand over the top to stop it popping out and onto the floor, when they free up from the top of the mounting rubber gently pull them out. Careful here as you might expose an earth wire connected to the instrument casings to the rubber fixing screws inside the rubber. Undo the earth wires and free the instruments. Undo the 4 screws inside the rubber and remove them.

The refitting is the reverse of removal, just check the alignment so the thumbscrew, cables and lamp holders do not foul the mount and they are fully home in the rubber.

Best wishes...

I know I'm being a dummy here Bess, and I know you said replacement is the reverse of removal but, having destroyed the speedo glass whilst employing immense amounts of effort trying to feed the instrument into the new and well lubricated rubber grommet/ mounting thingie.

The speedo has to go in at an angle to allow the trip reset drive to feed through the appropriate hole in the instrument case... Does that sound right?

As I mentioned, the rubbers are new, so not sure if that helps or hinders.

I'll get a new bezel and glass for the smiths speedo and have another go once that arrives.

Is there anything obvious that I might be doing wrong?

Sorry to be a nuisance Bess.....

Regards,
Dave.

Hi Dave,
Not sure which speedo you have.

When the rubbers are new they have a coating on which tends to grip the instruments and makes installation difficult, I worked the coating off with my fingers. The trip thumbscrew either pulls out or can be disconnected from the speedo before installation.

Best wishes...

They say a picture paints a thousand words- and that one explains it all to me Bess. I know what I have to remove and I'll work out how...

Glass and bezel ordered. it won't be here for a while though so i'll look at spraying up all the Gold paintwork, now that I've got the paint.

It's been a slow build, but with all the help from yourself Bess, and the other knowledgeable members on this site, it's progressing well.

Thanks again Bess.

Regards,
Dave
