Title: Recomissioning the Ignition System - Seeking Advice
Post by: chrisb on 02 Mar, 2021, 17:41
Hi, slowly (after 2 years) putting together my uncle's old B31 (1954).   I'm at the point of getting the ignition system running again.  I've previously worked only in more modern bikes and cars (1990 onwards) so the ignition in a B31 is a slight mystery to me!  Grateful for any advice on steps to take to bring the ignition back to life and test it.   Many thanks

I'm afraid I can't give you any specific info about that bike, but if you haven't yet got a manual I would get one asap as they will give step by step guide. It'll also show if you're missing any bits.

As for actually setting timing, I find satisfying myself I've got the engine in the correct place I E whatever degrees btdc the trickiest bit.

Have you tried you tube, usually some good 'how too' videos on there for most things.

You will certainly be dealing with a magneto, so I would suggest you go to the link below and check out the sections on ignition

thanks everyone.  Will check out those links.   I've an old manual but it assumes a level of knowledge I don't yet have, and the blurry pictures are awful!
