Hello all
The name plate on my magneto has a section for TYPE. in this area the magneto has been stamped with letters ( these are from seven different magnetos). Ro , AC53 , AC , SM, As far as I can make out these indicators are for the manufacturer of the bike that the magneto has been fitted to. For example AC20 means BSA.
Also at the end of the numbers is a letter, 42111D, these are the letters that I have, A, B ,E , D . Dose anyone know what all of these mean.
These letter combinations are from 1950 to 1963 .
Are these codes for styles of bikes and manufacturer,
Anyone have any ideas on this coding.
Thank-you for your help with this.
Speedy.
The long number is the build specification of the magneto and shows the application. The Lucas catalogues list the parts used for each build and also include an application list.
Some of the numbers on labels will have been superseded as the product improved.
The letters following the number show some upgrade , for example for some number indicates a change from brass points assembly to the later steel back low intertia assembly. But the meaning of the letters will depend on which mag number it follows - ie all Ds do not mean the same.
Over the years many parts will have become mixed up as owner interchange them.
Lots of information in the Lucas master catalogues. You can see the 1936-1957 master on the Bright Sparks website;

Below is an extract from another Lucas publication original and superseded numbers.
Hello all
Thank you for your help with this code number post.
The list of magnetos that has been posted has been a real help in identifying my cases. I still have a case number 42111D which is not in the listing.
If anyone has more details to add to this coding it would be most appreciated.
Thank you all again for participating in this matter. Especially to Julian.S
