Title: Best company for mudguards
Post by: Matt McGuigan on 24 Jan, 2021, 16:33
Its mudguard time for my '70 A65 and need info on the best place to buy them, from guys who can recommend a company they have experience of. I have looked online and there is a minefield of rubbish info on there. If you have bought from a good supplier and are happy with the quality and fit, then I would love to hear from you. TIA, Matt.

Hi Matt,

The last two I bought were from Burton Bike Bits.  Good chrome and a good fit.  I coated the parts that would not be seen with Waxoil.  With a good polish every now and then the one in regular use is as good as it was when fitted many thousands of miles ago.  The other has not fared too well as the bike languished in the back of the shed for several years without getting any care.
If I replace it I will back to BBB for the replacement.

Dave.

For my 1970 A65 Firebird rear guard, I bought a bare steel undrilled one from Autocycle. Obviously some time needed to get it positioned right before committing to drill clearance holes for mounting. I initially drilled small holes and used self tappers with big washers to get it it looking right..  I needed this guard because some DPO had hacksawed the rear end off of the original!!  :-\

Try Autocycle Engineering in Dudley 01384 253030. They used to make them from the same tooling the the supplier to BSA used to manufacture them. This company was Speedwell Gear Case Ltd and Chris Williams at Autocycle bought the tooling and machines from them many years ago when they were closing down, saving all that from the breakers yard. As yours will be chrome plated, rest assured they also use a local, top quality Chrome Platers so quality will be second to none.
Last year, Autocycle sold that part of their business to TriCor Andy who now manufactures and markets the mudguards under the old 'Speedwell' name. However, when I spoke to Chris a couple of months ago he still had stocks of the A65 guards and will continue to sell them going forward, so they are worth trying for a quote.
