Title: BSA Twin Restoration
Post by: MJM_58SR on 23 Jan, 2021, 08:45
Hi all
Do you consider the Roy Bacon book worthwhile buying? Will it give me any other information that I can't get from the members area library?
Also there are a few different WG Haycraft books on the book of the BSA, is this because there were lots of revisions? Again any opinions?
Thanks

Good morning,

It is also worth looking on Youtube.  There are some very good videos of rebuilds with hints and tips that are very useful and of course this Forum which is a bottomless pit of experience and information.

Dave.

Hi Dave
Thank you
I've used the forum quite a few times and it's really helpful, it was more if it's useful for reference photos etc and worth it as I put the A10 back together.

entirely up to personal choice. I bought my copy years ago printed 2011. now ended up with 2 copies,as I dont have internet at unit its useful for part number variations, finish and basic workshop information on updated mods. Ive got hundreds of manuals on my shelves and more on the computer . many I dont use but there if needed.
the computer is away from the bench, the book can be by the ramp or bench the keyboard keys suffer from dirt and oil.
the computer is ok at home but working on cnc machines in a workshop environment and the possibility of falling off  a bench or ramp .. books all the time.
I rebuilt my first twin from Haynes , second with RB and workshop manual, now spend most of the time with a parts book searching the internet for price and availability in the evenings.

I have the Roy Bacon book on the twins and find it very useful, but whenever I get another BSA I always buy a relevant copy of the parts manual and a workshop maual but make sure you obtain both that are applicable for the year of your bike as BSA made changes to parts each year The parts manual is the one that I use the most both can bought on line.

Thanks for the replies.
I've been using the parts manual in the library area but sometime difficult to see where everything fits.
Will have a scan round and see what I can find. Mines a June 1958 SR

Parts books essential but they do not cover mid season changes ammendments and corrections which happened after the book was printed. These updates came on parts service bulletins, many of which can be found on the Club website.

The original BSA supplied parts books used a fine print , much clearer than many of the copies offered for sale today.

The W C Haycraft Book of the BSA Twins is a care and maintenance manual, with some illustrations, my copy indicates it was first published in 1960, second edition in 1963 with several reprints and minor ammendments in 1969. The later copies are not securely bound and often loose pages.

The other contemporary book was "BSA Twin Motor Cycles" by D W Munro. Simiar size to Haycraft book. Some developement history some maintenance. Author was the BSA factory technical manager.
