Title: Early (62/63) A65 coil and side panel location and brackets
Post by: DiamondBeezer on 21 Jan, 2021, 11:38
Hi All

Mate of mine in South Africa is restoring a 62/63 A65 from a box of bits. He's struggling with the ignition coil location and brackets and the side panel location and brackets.  He's got no-one nearby with one that early to refer to.  Can anyone provide photos and/or description?

Thanks

Ian

My A50 engine is out of the frame at the moment. I will take a couple of pictures for you of the coils and side panel mounts. The early A50/65 has only one side panel fixing, the front of the side panel has a small tube on it to fit over 2 long manifold studs. The side panel is fitted to these first then swung in to fit the one mounting fixing.

PM me and I will email you some pics - easier to do that than to post on here.

I had the same problem with the 1965 A65 Lightning that I am building. (I never took it apart so I'm re-assembling blindly, and some parts are missing)
Without the great advice that I've had from the good members of this site I would be up the creek. (mind, nothing on this bike seems to comply with 'standard' fitting , as a result I have taken to making up my own brackets)

When fitting the ignition coils the site help was very in depth and helpful but, much as I tried to follow it, whenever I fitted the side panels the coils fouled it. Eventually I modified a bracket that I had made earlier and got the coils to fit using those.

These are the side panels I bought off ebay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BSA-A65-A50-TWIN-CARB-PAIR-OF-SIDE-PANELS-WITH-BADGE-RECESS-UK-MADE-/293976624389?hash=item44725f4d05

Happy to post some more detailed pictures if it helps in any way.

Regards,
Dave.
