The star washer on the steering damper on my A65 lightning build project has broken into bits and I don't know why.
The bike is not close to being a runner, sitting on its centre stand while I attempt to build it,..... yet this is the 2nd (brand new) Star washer that has chosen to disintegrate.
Build arrangement is as per spares manual: Damper centre (65- 5328), Star washer (25- 5247), anchor plate (42- 5014) then friction washer (65- 5380).
I tighten the knob, to dampen the steering, by hand.
I have been sent a new replacement but, rather than risk repeating overloading the star washer to destruction, was wondering if there might be something obvious that I am doing wrong....
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Dave.
my only thought if two new ones have gone is try an old one. if that is ok it may be the tempering has hardened the new ones so the batch may be the same. should be some sort of spring steel.
Same star washer used on many models over many years.
Have had and regularly used my A10 for 47 years and still fitted with washer I had when I bought the bike. The damper does not usually need to be very tight but it should stand being really tight for use when a sidecar attached.
Photo setup on my A10.
Sorry, I thought I'd replied to this thread.....(Wot an ignorant git eh?)
Following your suggestions I'll try tempering this one (cherry Red then douse in oil tank- I believe, from my RAF training..)
I'll also look out for an original one.
Thanks for your help,
Dave.
