Title: Ss80 jumping out of 1st gear
Post by: Thingymebob on 23 Nov, 2020, 20:55
Hi folks, I am new to the forum and new to the world of British motor bike ownership. I have got myself a 1963 C15 Ss80 and unfortunately it's jumping out of 1st gear. JFI, I was told when I got it it had a new clutch plate. Any ideas on what the problem may be.
Thanks

Common problem with C15/B40 gearboxes, the dogs on layshaft first gear are worn. It is possible to swap with third gear on mainshaft as they drive in different directions and they are the same gear, but this means stripping the gearbox out.

Thanks Colin
I was hoping it may be just some clutch adjustment as it's had a new clutch, but when letting the clutch out I have to let it out almost fully before it bites. Oh well looks like it's a big job then. Again thanks

You can adjust the cable to give yourself more free play which will get the clutch to bite earlier, or you can undo the clutch adjuster which is accessed through the plug in the primary chaincase half a turn to do the same (you may have to do a bit of adjust and testing to get the bite point where you want it).
To change first gear on the layshaft you have to remove the timing side case and the timing inner case, personally I'd live with it jumping out of first gear as long as it only happens occassionally.

Again thanks Colin for the advice. I will start with clutch adjustment and see if that improves the situation if not ill need to do a bit of YouTube watching and reading on stripping the gear box.  :o   any links of a dive on this would be appreciated.

bsaunitsingles.com lets you download service sheets which detail strip and rebuild procedures. Rupert Ratio also does a book on BSA unit singles, which I found useful whist rebuilding my SS90. Draganfly.co.uk is another useful site for spares and exploded diagrams of engine. Hope this all helps.
