Title: Full beam warning lamp
Post by: BruceB on 16 Nov, 2020, 22:23
The full beam warning light on the headlamp shell of my newly acquired Spitfire is crooked and won't sit flush. I took off the headlight shell and the lamp is being pushed back by the headlight itself. I am assuming that the shell with the modern lamp in it is a bit deeper than the original version.
I had a look around and could not fit any alternatives that were shorter than normal, is this something that there is a easy and cheap solution to and a shorter version is available somewhere not so obvious?

I have two warning lights in my A50 headlamp, one for main beam and the other is an ignition warning light. The standard panel mount fitting interfered with the reflector so fitted leds. These are quite expensive produced by Marl, but are excellent quality nickel plated for high vibration situations. You get what you pay for. If you shop around you can sometimes find the on ebay etc at a reasonable price. I also have a third miniature indicator warning light fitted between the speedo and rev counter, all the additional electronics being fitted inside the headlamp.

Hi,

Is the ignition warning light not the oil pressure light?  Comes on and off with the ignition but is switched off in use by the oil pressure switch.

Dave.

Hi Dave,
Only on bikes with an Oil pressure switch.

Best wishes...

Hi,

Did the ignition light go off once the alternator was charging the battery as with a car or just remain on to show the ignition was on.  If it went off with charging what was fitted to do this?

Dave.

I have found the shorter LED version you mention and ordered one. Hopefully it will clear the headlight and sort this niggle.

Hi Dave
The light comes on with the ignition but goes out when the battery is charging as in a car. A little gizmo from Paul Goff fits inside the headlamp, circuit diagram included.

One off my bikes has a red light that stays on all the time when switched on. Charging fine.

These idiot lights are notorious for being loose in the hole. There are a lot of pattern parts out there that are generally too long and by the time you have connected the wires, they clout the rear of the headlamp reflector. I buy the 'genuine' Lucas ones with the pull out bulb holder. I glue the outer part (glass) into the hole with some silicone gasket goo and this goes a long way to keeping it in place, plus twisting a thin tie-wrap around it pushing it to the top just under the shell and letting it set in excess goo that's present. However, before doing that, check that the assembly will clear the headlamp reflector. If it doesn't, then with this type of holder, you can shorten the outer part still leaving room for the bulb and holder, thereby raising it a bit more clear of the reflector.
