Title: Toolbox catches
Post by: waco16 on 15 Nov, 2020, 09:55
Does anyone have a source for the catches on '30's toolboxes
Mine is a 1933 W6 with the 'suitcase' style

If you look on the internet under "Antique suitcase catches" you will find something similar to what you need, although they are bronze coloured instead of nickel plate. Original type catches were available many years ago when I fitted them to my W35/6 & Y13 but no idea where to get them now. Hope this helps a bit.

I also struggled with this. Sadly searching for antique catches only found modern or cheap and nasty looking things. Eventually I found a derelict case at a charity shop. The catch was correct but the hasp was too short. I made a solid one from brass and grafted it into the old hinge. I carefully took the catch apart to make a key and replate it.
This is the result prior to plating.

A Panther Owners Club member, Bruce Sharman, has made catches for toolboxes on vintage Panthers. He runs https://www.bygonesparesandrestorations.com/
and is very skilled. He is in Perth, Western Australia.
Could be worth contacting if you can't find anything suitable.
Cheers, Bevan.

I used one from an old suitcase which I think is similar to the one they used but the hasp was too short.
So I made a form of 3 mm iron that I hammered 1 mm sheet metal around.
This is what it looks before it is nickel-plated.
