Title: front fork strip.
Post by: Taffyboy on 10 Nov, 2020, 20:09
Ive stripped down the front forks on my '69 a65 today. (bushes worn, stantions pitted). My question is how to remove the oil seals from the chrome top cover jobbo? seems to be a lip either side of it.. ?

there is one at the bottom but there is a large washer on the top, it will come out but is size for size with the seal holder bore so prepare for a struggle, especially if the holder is dented

Warm that end up in HOT water before you tackle it.

thats why Ive got a industrial paint stripper (hi powered hair dryer) at the unit, not quite hot enough for bearings but useful.

This is what you need, the correct workshop tool for the job.
The protrusions on the end slot into the corresponding slots in the seal holders, from the top. One quick blow with a hammer and they come flying out.
The other end is the correct size for fitting the new seals in the underside as it fits the bottom of the seal perfectly, yet slides in the holder.
Makes the job a cinch.

Ha, result. Had a word with our engineering shop in work. Fitter sourced me a scrap 38mm stainless steel tube, cut out the tabs with my trusty angle grinder and bosh. two wacks and they're out. Cheers for the inspiration chaps
