just a question as Ive never seen before, (A65 1966 &67, B40, Triumphs etc) the A50 Im working on has been painted with red paint underneath on the cast areas, cant say Ive ever seen it before, was it purely a rust proofing process?
Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure the barrels on my 1970 A50 are the same.
Don't ask me to remove and check as the answer may not be conducive to friendly relations etc. :)
My 1971 Firebird Scrambler had red paint on the underside of the barrels too. I assumed it was for rust protection as well.
part of the reason for asking, was that when we had a foundry, all the cast iron castings , apart from SGI crankshafts, were dipped in red oxide, so coated inside and out, the cylinders on the A50 are only painted underneath, which would be coated with oil anyway?
:) :) :)
Hi
We always used Read Lead---Red Oxide in places where the seal was particularly important but where gasket cement was inadviseable. Like on the cylinder heads and blocks on the ancient tractors.
However I have seen the underside of barrels treated the same. could be myriad reasons.

Hi,
Probably glyptal, used to seal the cast and help return oil quickly to the sump.
Best wishes...
