Title: Lazy starting A65t
Post by: Wessex100 on 13 Oct, 2020, 21:58
Hi All.
Have a 1970T with brand new carb, electronic ignition. Starts first kick when warm, but annoyingly take 6/7 kicks when cold. Tries to start each kick but only starts after several attempts.  I believe, from previous owner that the carb jetted correctly and needle in correct position. Runs and pulls like a train once warm.
Before I start tweaking, any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Did you ask previous owner how he started the bike?
Most of us have a "special way" of starting these old machines.
Are you using choke? Are you partly opening the throttle when starting? Are you over/ under tickling the carburettor? Are you flooding the engine a little? Are you giving the kickstart a really good firm swing when starting?
All these things can make a difference:
On my A50, no choke unless very cold, quick tickle of the carb, one slow swing of the kickstart with throttle partly open, then turn on ignition and give good swing on kickstart and we are running!
It may be a case of trial and error until you find the knack!

How long has the bike been stood when cold?  My reason for asking is that if there has been some 'wet sumping' this could be one of the reasons for symptoms you describe. Has your engine been fitted with an alloy sump plate with drain plug? If so, before starting the bike from cold, just drain the sump as a check then replace the drain bolt and try again.
My A65 performs just like you describe and this is the procedure I have to follow if bike been laid up for some time (but not daily or even weekly). If you're having to drain the sump on a daily basis further action may be required.. HTH

Thanks for your replies.
It may well be technique....time will tell. My AJS 500 will only start for me! No one else can.

I don't think wet sumping is the issue however I will be checking. Luckily it has been fitted with a lovely alloy plate with drain plug.
My last A65 on worn carb and points always was an excellent starter which is why I ask. I'm sure over time I will fettle it as I do so like a easy starting bike.
My initial thoughts are wrong plug, float height. Also it came with two new,as yet, unfitted coils.

Both my previous Thunderbolts and my current Royal Star require(d) tickling when starting from cold. Don't be scared to see the petrol squirting out.
My OIF Thunderbolt needed both tickling and choke full on to start from cold in the cold weather, from about end October to March. This one had a brand new Amal Premier. What brand/type of carb is your new one?
