Title: A65 timing side outer cover
Post by: Mike Farmer on 12 Oct, 2020, 15:40
 :) :) :)

Hi
I am considering changing my timing side outer cover for the later type, so a couple of Q's

Does anyone have a diagram of the later type or able to tell me where I might find one.

It always appeared to me to be a better system--any opinions on that.

Would I gain anything by changing??????????

Drags point up that some parts are very much the same as T140---Any observations on this.

You advice appreciated

Hi Mike,

Both my A65s have the later cover/clutch arrangement but I am sure the inner case has to be changed as well and the odd screw is different.
I have read a few articles that suggest that the earlier system gave a bit more lift on the clutch.
If Allan G reads this he may comment as I think the converted back to he earlier type.
I would think that there would be little advantage and suspect that the change was to allow the use of the Triumph mechanism in the A65.
Pages from parts book attached.

Dave.

Hi Mike,
Draganfly site has the images, I bought mine on Ebay.

I feel it is a better system but you will need to change the inner cover as well. Careful which you match up the 1971 -1972 cases have 7 screws the 1970 has 6. When I did this I had the timing gear bushes changed and line reamed as you cant be sure the inner case bushes will line up with the crankcases. The handlebar clutch lever pivot also has to be correct or the cam balls in the cases will turn out of their indents and make a noise. The system will clash with the Firebird high level exhaust, I have made a walk around for this issue if you need it.

The gain is a better run for the cable and easier to operate. I would only do it during a ground up rebuild.

Hope this helps, best wishes...

Beware, the Triumph 'rising balls' mechanism is different to the BSA one. i.e the Triumph one won't fit. The BSA one is like Rocking horse doodah so if yours has one, look after it!

'the cam balls in the cases will turn out of their indents and make a noise'.

Ah yes the dreaded click! No it's not the clutch cable giving way as most riders think when they first experience it. The OIF ones are worse for doing this as the travel on the Lucas h/bar levers is greater than the distance of the lever on the lift mechanism in order to just bring the balls to the top. It takes a bit of fiddling to get it just right but it is achievable, (it only took me about 12 years).

Hi

As ever thanks for all the answers.

It would appear that this is more of a job than I fondly imagined, especially as it would seem that some parts are not easy to aquire. I shall most likely just start collecting bits as I go along and when I think I've got them all I'll have a go at it.

Mind you, by then I probably won't know why I bought the bits in the first place.

Thanks again----all very interesting.

Hi

Having re-read these posts I shall probably forgo this option as I intend to fit high level pipes. We'll see
