Title: Speedo and Tacho cable details
Post by: beesa71 on 07 Oct, 2020, 13:15
A question has arisen about how far the inner cable for 60mm and 80mm Smiths Magnetic instruments (SSM and RSM) should protrude from the outer cable at the instrument end? Assuming correct installation at the drive end of course.

I thought I had a data sheet or suchlike that indicated the maximum protrusion, a maximum intended to ensure there was no load exerted on the workings of the instrument, but I cannot now find it!

Can anyone help with this information or it's source please?

Thank you.

There's this. I bought a cable from this company and it works well, so I imagine he knows what he is on about:

That's a good link to Russell's site, thank you. That length is in the range I expected. Some cables are therefore well over length on inner.

I'm sure though I've seen a later Smiths brochure or suchlike with specific reference to the SSM and RSM ranges.

All help very much appreciated.

Paul.

On Smiths Chronometric the inner cable should not exceed 7/16" as it could damage the interior workings, this is from Chronometric Instruments Services, Magnetic is a different thing altogether and I'm not sure about that one.
