Oil Pressure Switch Leak A65L 1970
« on: 02 May, 2017, 12:08:46 »
Probably something easily rectified but don't want to mess up. Trickle of oil leaking past my oil pressure switch at bottom of switch on my 1970 A65 L pre oil in frame. Can't spot any gasket in place or on parts plan and have tightened up in case vibration causing to loosen in past but don't want to overtighten. Only recently started leaking. Did debate as to whether to put some minimal gasket compound at far distance from oil pressure sensor to avoid blocking switch to wrap itself around thread as a seal. Is it a new switch through wear in thread or whatever as bike otherwise oil tight. Any suggestions welcome and thanks. Hugh

Hi Hugh,
I am not entirely sure where its leaking from the description. If its leaking via the threads, I would remove the switch, clean the threads, using PTFE thread tape, wrap anti clockwise a few times ensuring the switch bore is not obstructed and replace switch.

Best wishes...

Thanks Bess for this. Its where the thread on the oil pressure switch screws into the engine and its seeping past there. I sort it tomorrow. Hugh

Hi Hugh,
Okay, sounds like the thread tape should suffice.

However I have had instances where thread core/root has a tiny crack due to it being inadvertently knocked, it maybe worth further investigation.

Best wishes...

As this was the only post I could find with same problem I had on a 1969 Lightning I thought I’d share my solution if anyone else searches for same thing.

First thing I should note is that I have the SRM oil pump.

I noticed oil pouring from the rubber gator protecting the oil pressure switch every time I stopped and put the bike on its centre stand. Naturally I thought the oil was bypassing the threads on the switch. I took it out and noticed the small o-ring was a bit mashed so I just bought a new switch off eBay. After reading the posts above I fItted new switch with lots of PTFE tape and assumed all fixed until I noticed same issue with oil filling into the gator then dripping out into a puddle.  So then I cursed myself for buying maybe a cheap made Chinese copy off eBay when I could have paid a few quid more for an SRM switch (identical picture to eBay one). So got the SRM switch. Again same problem with leak!!!

So after careful examination with bike running and armed with strategically placed tissues I found the oil was coming out of the plastic housing in front of the nut, not from the threaded side. That’s how it was getting into the rubber gator. I cannot find any post relating to this issue, yet I had 3 switches do the exact same thing. I looked through eBay and found a switch for a Ford Escort Cosworth for high oil pressure situations where oil may be leaking through the housing of regular switches. However this switch has a 1/4 NPT thread. For around a tenner I ordered it as an experiment but also had to buy a 1/8 BSP male to 1/4 NPT female coupler for about 3 quid. Again I wrapped PTFE on all threads and fItted it. I now have zero oil leaks  and feel I can leave the bike on fancy driveways without leaving oil on them.

Hope useful.
