Vehicle registration
« on: 31 May, 2018, 12:16:35 »
 :)

Greetings. I have never registered an MOT exempt vehicle before, so need a bit of assist. What exactly do I have to do. What forms do I actually need. I've just read thro .gov and arrived at a point of total non clarity (surprise surprise).

For instance, do I actually need the relevant form for initial historic registration??

So any help gratefully accepted

Is this a completely new registration (no current V5C) or just a change of an already registered bike to Historic Class?

Hi,
    This is worth a read,

https://www.bsaownersclub.co.uk/agerelatedplatenotes.html

I sent off a V112 MoT exemption form with my application.

Best wishes...

This might be an interesting one because normally you need to apply for the V5C after getting the bike MOT'd and insured first. Can you apply for MOT exemption at the same time ::)

Hi,
On my last application in March this year the bike wasn't insured, it was MoT'ed because it was 1966 frame therefore not exempt.

The latest bike is also 1966 but with the new 40 year rule introduced on the 20th May it is exempt a MoT, therefore as per the BSAOC advice I used a V112 form instead.

Best wishes...

Being a bear of very small brain, is your post suggesting that Insurance is (now) not necessary for initial registration.

Hi Mike,
I guess not, my successful application this year before the MoT changes for a 1966 A65 contained the following:

•   V55/5 application form
•   Original BSAOC Vehicle Report Certificate
•   MoT Test Certificate
•   Photocopy confirmation of my name and address using both parts of my photo card driving licence
•   HMRC NOVA acknowledgement letter (the frame came from the USA)
•   Images shown LHS, RHS, frame number and engine number of the motorcycle (I didn't have a vehicle inspection)
•   Cheque £55, for the first registration fee.

I received the registration in less than 2 weeks, it is a nice selection of numbers and letters  :) :)

Last weeks application for my sons 1966 A65, after the MoT change contains (I'll let you know how he gets on):

•   V55/5 application form
•   Original BSAOC Vehicle Report Certificate
•   V112 MoT exemption form
•   Photocopy confirmation of his name and address using both parts of his photo card driving licence
•   HMRC NOVA acknowledgement letter (another frame came from the USA)
•   Images shown LHS, RHS, frame number and engine number of the motorcycle
•   Cheque £55, for the first registration fee

Best wishes...

I have been through this process 3 times over the years and whilst you now may not need insurance to register the the bike  you still I believe need an MOT now you can transport the bike to and from the test centre but if you ride it there which you are allowed to do provided it is pre booked in you certainly at least need third party insurance.

The V55/5 only asks for an MOT certificate "where appropriate". IF you bike qualifies for exemption under the new 40 year rule then complete a V112 you dont need MOT to apply to register it. If your bike does not qualify under the 40 year rule then an MOT is required to register it.

Do you think you needed the bike to be insured before applying?

I need to look at the regulations a bit more closely but I'd almost convinced myself that insuring the bike before applying for an age related registration wasn't a requirement!

The form used to apply for age related plate, the V55/5, is an application for first tax and registration of a used motor vehicle. You need insurance to tax a vehicle even though it is free.
