Starfire oil tank filter
« on: 16 February, 2018, 16:18:37 »
I have recently purchased 2 oil tank filters 29-7962 from different suppliers neither of which seem to fit the oil tank of my 1970 Starfire. The thread on the replacements is 20 TPI just like the original. However the diameters are 0.864" as opposed to 0.875" of the original (7/8"). Has anyone come across this before? Are there some of dodgy manufacture out there?

The BSC thread on the oil tank has to be a sensible imperial size and 0.864" is not one of them - 7/8" must be correct. It looks as though the thread on the filter will have been formed on a lathe rather than using a die and it's not difficult to cut it to the wrong diameter. Your pair of filters might well have been manufactured by the same person who must have got the dimensions wrong for the thread. It's not the first time this has happened!
