Points cam
« on: 25 January, 2018, 10:46:30 »
I thought I'd have a look at the points on my "new" 1965 B40 (side points.) Does the cam look the right profile? I was expecting a circle with a high spot, but this (see photo attached) looks to me (novice) more like a circle with a flat. Thanks in advance. Phil.

Looks fine to me. The shape gives the required dwell.

yep that's fine
looks just same as mine
just check the plastic heal on the end of points, that it is not badly worn, as it can make setting up difficult
only put a small amount of oil on felt tab

Cams's fine but it's best to route the wire behind the spring and top pillar to avoid it coming into contact with the moving parts!

Good morning everyone, I've just had a look at doing that, but it appeared to mean putting a sharp bend in the connector, so I left it alone. Under the cover is a disc made of some kind of thin paper (see new photo attached) - doesn't appear to be gasket material, more the consistency of greaseproof paper - to help weatherproof the points etc I guess? Also, where is the felt pad which should have a small drop of oil? Thanks again for your help.

The picture shows a points plate with the lubricating felt pad at the top. In this type of assembly, the points are mounted on a separate small plate which incorporate the felt pillars for the felt pad - there are adjustment screws to allow the timing to be slightly changed without affecting the points gap. Without looking, I can't remember whether the B40 has this type of points plate.

From the owners manual, I think the answer is that it doesn't have a felt pad!

The 1965 models would have originally had the 4CA points assembly with condenser mounted on the plate and with screw for gap adjustment but no  screw for micro adjustment to timing.(as shown in first photo)

The photo from the Lucas service manual tells how to lubricate the 4CA assembly under heading "maintenance".

The later 6CA plate had remote condenser with screw for gap adjustment, screw for timing adjustment and felt pad, but whole assembly could retro fitted to earlier models.

My points are in the photo at the top of page 1 of this discussion - I don't see any felt pad?

Also, any idea about the paper disc? (purpose? material?)  Phil.

Phil. As indicated, the points plate your B40 did not come with a felt pad for lubrication of the cam (nor the timing micro adjustment capability) - as per service sheet, you need to smear the cam with grease occasionally. Unfortunately, the tin plate points cover was never much good at keeping the weather out and the grease proof paper was someone's mod to try to improve the situation.

It's all very interesting. Thanks very much anyway. I'm bound to be back soon with another stupid question!
