Socket set?

Coming to put my petrol tank back on my B40F, I realise I need a socket set (BSF/Whit) with extension piece, in order to reach the nut down inside the tank centre hole. Can't find one on ebay. I've just put a message on the Wanted board, but wonder if any of you might have an old set surplus to requirements?  I guess not, but worth a shot!  Otherwise I might have to wait and look at the Shepton Mallet autojumble later this month. Phil.

PS Hope I don't get into trouble for posting this on the Singles page, but thought as I'd had a fair bit of communication with some of you I might give it a go.

The problem you might find with a socket is that, as you screw the nut on, the length of exposed thread on the bolt might exceed the length of the socket - it did on my B40. I therefore use a box spanner on this nut.

I'll have a look at the one I've got to check what size it is - it might well have BSF at one end and BSW at the other ::)

Got my long reach bsf and a set of whitworth sockets for little money from amazon .

I can't remember: do imperial AF sizes correspond to BSF/Whit sizes? For example, is a 1/2" AF the same as a 5/16 BSF? My neighbour kindly lent me a socket labelled 1/2" this morning, and it fitted my nut, which I thought was 5/16" BSF/ 1/4 Whit. I ask because AF seem easier to find then BSF/Whit. But I suspect there isn't always an AF to fit the BSF/Whit you want.   Phil.

The answer is no they dont.

The other thing to consider is whether a 3/8 inch drive set might give better access to some areas of the bike than you might get with a 1/2 inch drive set.

I only own 1 box spanner which I've had for many decades but it happens to fit the petrol tank securing nut on BSA's. I definitely wouldn't be tempted to buy any more.
