No oil return

Just added oil to my 1965 A50 after a total rebuild. Been kicking it over for ages and nothing coming up the return oil pipe. (It has gone down the feed pipe) Do I need to prime the oil pump to get it feeding through or should that not be necessary. Thanks in advance for any help.

Did you pour a fair bit of oil into the rockers , to dribble down lubricating everything and sitting in the sump ready to get sucked up into the scavenge pipe.
The gear pumps are good at moving oil , but not the initial empty suction
