locally , we had a foundry welder, Polish , in our factory foundry. when he retired the company sent work and gas bottles to his house.
he could weld sh!t to a shovel. Ally petrol tanks, did many barrel fins and lister engines. well thought of by the local classic communities.
One tip I picked up was, the fins welded close to the barrel and unseen. get a piece of plate and medium shot blast for effect, close to the barrel.
you get a good weld and visual effect.
another tip for fins in the middle, break off the ones higher up, then do the lower one then the next finishing with the easy access one.

Saw them off rather than break them off. It makes for an easier refix and doesn't risk breaking the fins into smaller pieces.
