gear selector problem
« on: 06 November, 2017, 12:30:09 »
B31; 1955; M series type gearbox

Help !... this is doing my crust in !!!  I've assembled the gear selector unit as per the service sheet but once the springs are on they pull the pawls away from the ratchet plate. When I put the unit into the box I have to lever the top pawl carrier past the stops on the gearbox
I cant see there is another way of putting it together...believe me I've tried !... so what am I missing ????

Hi

Thanks but I've seen that and as far as I'm aware I've put it together as per the instructions.. but once place in the box the pawls are nowhere near the ratchet...so where am I going wrong ?

i have never worked on that type before so excuse my ignorance when i ask this, what happens when you put gear lever in place and try and select a gear?

do they not engage when shaft is turned by gear lever?

Sorry I can't help directly but I'd put money on you getting an answer from one of the many experts on the BSA WM20 forum. You don't have to sign up or join to post on there and I have found them very helpful as I blunder my way through an M20 rebuild.

good luck!

Hi

Operating the gear change lever allows the pawl to engage on one side with the ratchet but it wont move either up or down a "slot"  there doesnt appear to be enough free movement

sorry cant be of more help, maybe a fresh pair of eyes can see something.

Sometimes when you are looking for a problem it needs somebody else to have a look, is nobody local to you on forum, i am in Glasgow so doubt if i am close!   :-[
