Cheap Chinese regulator/rectifier
« on: 29 June, 2024, 09:37:40 »
Has anyone tried these cheap regulator/rectifiers from China?  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204692212130

Temptingly cheap - but are they diabolical quality?

That got me thinking about how you could bench test one? I guess you need to put some AC in, and check that you get no more than 13 - 14V DC out?

I have a similar (but 3 phase) one fitted to a Yamaha 250 v twin. It seems very nicely made. It also works well but haven't used it for long yet. These things are fairly basic and I can't really understand why people charge £50+ for some models.

Having said that, I don't think there's much wrong with a solid state recifier and Zener diode setup but the latter are getting hard to come by.

I don't know how well they work on classic bikes, but I tried one on a 2006 Triumph Daytona 955i. It seemed to work until you tried travelling 100 miles in one go. Then it overheated and took out a chunk of wiring. I wouldn't risk it again.

The average modern bike 3 phase stator puts out about 90v AC.
If you're using a 15 quid single phase chinese unit to convert your bantam or C15 or similar 6 volt bikes to 12v , then they seem to be fine.
I've converted C15, ajs 250 bantam d14 etc using these little units
