Putting a Brake on It
« on: 29 May, 2024, 14:38:49 »
Hello,

The latest challenge:

Topic: 1931 Blue Star
Problem: back brake pedal on the left (sitting on the bike) and brake on the right.

Could a lovely member send any information as to how the assembly works ? Pretty much the only parts listed are the pedal and grease nipple, and I'm hoping it's not just held on by the power of prayer/glue/good luck.

Huge thanks, in anticipation.

Well my parts lists only go back to 1939. But my 39 C10 has a "crossover" rear brake with pedal shaft that runs in a tube across the frame. I've ringed the parts here as explanation. However, one of my Royal Enfield's has a cable operated crossover brake. Has yours got the crossover tube or is a cable mentioned in your 31 parts list?  Ron

As Ron says, you will need a brake cross shaft, but the part number is 24-8076, so may be different to the C10. You also need a cross shaft lever, similar to the C10, but with 2 arms, one for the return spring and one for the clevis pin, part number 24-8072
You will find that there are a pair of lugs on the frame tubes which the Factory kindly bushed, ready for fitting the shaft.
Both ends of the shaft are squared and have grease nipples. A rod runs from the cross shaft lever to the rear brake lever.
Hope this is of some help.

Well done Steve! I don't have the benefit of any pre war parts lists. (My whole collection is WW2) The correct part numbers will be of some use for looking at them in an illustrated parts list, but I expect the parts will have to be found or made without using the part numbers. Ron

Have a look at 'bsa-info.nz' and go to 'Various', you'll find quite a number of parts list that you can download.
