Anyone have any recommendations on where to get a Amal carburettor re sleeved.
Thanks in advance.

Sabre

Anyone no what diameter the throttle slide should be on a type 76 Amal carb ?.

Try Martin Bratby   0777 2169 524
Knows his stuff and how to refurb carbs
He even had parts for my 1920s amac
BSA: turning ordinary men into mechanics since 1910

Steve.S

The slide is 1 3/16" diameter.

Sabre

Ok thanks all I may be able to get away with just a new throttle slide hopefully.

Mr Bratby no longer does this work, so I've been told.

Martyn has had serious health issues which have curtailed his carb refurb business.  Ron

Regarding the throttle slide, I've noticed that you can buy copies of Amal made slides at a much lower price; does anyone know if they're any good or if it's better to opt for an original Amal made slide ?.

militaryron

You can probably buy one from India, cast in the sand by a bare foot wallah......But why would you risk it? Ron

V500

Yep, buy cheap, get cheap.

Sabre

Yes, you're probably right, the cheaper slide I was looking at is sold by Hitchckocks motorcycles.

militaryron

As far as I know, Hitchcock's only sell genuine Amal carbs and parts. They are one of the best firms to deal with. I buy all my Amal parts from them, Usually a bit cheaper than Burlen Fuels (Amal Carbs Ltd)  Ron

Sabre

Well the throttle slides listed for the 76/276 carbs are definitely marked as reproduction.

militaryron

Yes I see what you mean. That's a new one on me. I guess Alan is getting them made elsewhere to combat the high Amal price. An email to Hitchcock's to validate the quality won't hurt. Ron

Sabre

Yes, I emailed Hitchcocks and apparently they've had them made locally for 30 years, with quality equal to Amal's, and like you say Ron Amal's price was a determining factor in getting them made.
