Hi,

A while back in The Star there was an article about a youngish chap who undertook aluminium welding and machining repairs to crank cases etc.   I have just looked through the contents for the last couple of years but to no avail.
Can anyone remember what issue it was in or indeed recommend someone who can do this type of work?  Preferably in the northern half of the country.

Dave.

I've sent a link for your post to someone who does this work.

Hi,

Thanks.  I look forward to being contacted.

Dave.

T&L Engineering just outside Bedford do everything for all kinds of old engines & are good friends of BSAOC.
Barry is your man.

Thanks Bill,

I am compiling a bit of a list.  I will contact each of them and send photos to get and idea of what they can do and cost.

Hello Dave.

Somehow I never seem to think that crank case welding is very successful, I can remember some ttime ago,  having a chain case done and while it looked a really good weld, it started leaking from somewhere next to tthe weld, I guess it must have been stress or not so good as I first thought. I did try that HTS2000 on small jobs but on bigger things the whole casting needs to be hotted up for it to work. My 2d,

I had a new idler gear housing welded into a Mini gearbox case nearly 40 years ago, rather than buy a new case. It was done by a new-ish firm in Leighton Buzzard. I've had a look & M&J Welding sort of sounds familiar. It was a top notch precision job & a number of other Mini Cooper Club members had theirs done afterwards. If it was M&J he might remember it as he was a newco at the time.
Probably worth adding to a list & asking St Albans and BBB branches if they know him?

Dave,
I've been doing this kind of work since I was a teenager.
I'm even qualified to weld aluminium overhead, not that I like doing it.
You just have to catch us on a day when we are not snowed under.

Hi Mark,

It would be great if you could do this job for me.  I know you do not have a lot of space for pending jobs but is it possible to bring the cases to you so that if a time slot comes up they they are on hand?

Dave.

If you could leave it till June Dave, I'm desperate to clear some jobs that have been here too long.

Hi Mark,

That is great as I am not desperate for them.  Hopefully we will probably bump in to each other before then.

Dave.

This was the chap I was going to get to try and salvage my B21  Timing side case.    Some of his work is simply astonishing.

Usual caveats;  I don't know him, I've not been paid by him but I did speak to him a couple of times when I was trying to sort my problem out and I'm sure I would have been a satisfied customer if I hadn't found a replacement case which was the easier option!

"Badfoot Customs" is his (unusual) name.
