L.E.D headlight on original 6v system

Hi, I recently installed indicators and an L.E.D headlight bulb on my B40F, to reduce the load on the system and get something better than a candle to light my way at night!
Perhaps because of the rather rudimentary electrical system on the bike, I am experiencing some strobing worthy of a dodgy nightclub! Has any fitted an led bulb? I believe something like a 9v  10k> capacitor in parallel with the bulb would smooth things out, that's a stab in the dark, excuse the pun!

Had the same strobing with my C11, and thought I would try a smoothing Capacitor, but could not find a suitable place to fit one somewhere on the 6v negative line.    I did touch the capacitor across the battery, but that did not stop the problem.   I think the voltage spikes from the dynamo somehow affect the inbuilt power regulator of the LED.   So I went back to the old style bulb.

I don't know if you are asking me, but yes I was using an electronic regulator in the old relay box, which I have now renewed with an encapsulated one.

Thanks guys,  I have not moved to a reg/rec yet. Just the standard 6v system at the minute.  I'll try a capacitor in parallel near the bulb to see if that makes any difference, and then just go back to a standard bulb!!

thats interesting as I fitted a LED headlight onto the M21 and i have not seen any problems at all. Does it strobe
on low revs or all the time? The light is definitely worth persevering with because mine makes a big difference.
Sounds like what one of the other guys said in his comments about uneven charge from the dynamo which is why
i asked if it happened through the full rev range.

Hi,

It may be worth speaking to Paul Goff who supplies LEDs and lot of other electrical stuff.   01494 868218

Hi, thanks.

I have switched to 12v now and fitted a modern reg/rec
It was strobing all the tim bit pulsing in time with revs. It's a 65 B40 so no dynamo.

I suspect it was just a badly controlled LED, they should have build on capacitors to smooth their operation but I may have purchased a crappy one.  I will look at the better 12v options.

I think the strobing may have something to do with the rectified ac not being being sufficiently smoothed. A largish capacitor should smooth out any ac ripple although I'd have thought the battery would help with  that. I run 12V from a dynamo, which has been fully converted to 12V, with a Vreg-2A regulator. All the lights are LED with no strobing whatever.
