A65 Fitting a oil pressure gauge
« on: 13 October, 2017, 17:25:11 »
Hi. I have a 1972 Thunderbolt. This engine has the oil pressure switch fitted. Does anyone know where i can buy parts to fit a Oil pressure Gauge, in place of the OPS. SRM sell Gauge's but no fitting's. Any advice on how to proceed are welcome. I would prefer to buy a ready made kit but I cant find anything outside of the USA.
Thanks

I bought all of the parts required from here:
http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/product.php/210/oil-pressure-gauge-capillary-type

They also supply a capillary extension kit and T-piece.
Send for their catalogue.

Thanks for the info.

I use one of the T-piece outlets for a connection to the capilliary tube, the other for the oil pressure switch.

Should you intend to use the pressure gauge as an instrument whilst bike being ridden rather than as a workshop diagnostic tool you may wish to consider how to isolate the copper capillary from engine vibration and possible fracture.

A fractured pipe, which is situated between the pump and the crankshaft, would likely lead to a catastrophic engine lubrication failure.

Service sheet below from BSA gives a pressure figure.

Put a loop on the capilliary pipe so that there's no tension on it.
Vibration is the enemy.

The oil gauge would be a permanent fitting. Thanks for the vibration warning

My copy of the Vehicle Wiring Products catalogue, admittedly several years old, lists the gauge as not suitable for motorcycles. I would suggest checking with them before fitting.

Have you seen this Morgo item? Comes with flexible connection rather than metal tube but I dont know how it connects. I have found Morgo to be helpful if phoned.

Hi,
A few photos of mine, I used plastic pipe such as this

https://www.carbuildersolutions.com/de/oil-pressure-gauge-tube-18-npt-female-end-and-18-bsp-female-with-male-cone-end

The gauge is glycerine filled to reduce vibration fatigue. A folded stainless plate fitted and secured under the clocks.

Best wishes...
