engine oil for WM20

I am trying to find the best engine oil to use in my 1942 M20. I have looked on several sites and forums, only to be totally confused.
would be grateful for your advice/suggestions.

I use SAE 40 all year round

1950 M20 Nearly there, just a firing up problem
1953 M21 getting it all together
1967 C15 oily rag but runs very well
1962 Ariel Golden Arrow, needs a lot more work
