beagle crankcase grub screw
« on: 11 July, 2023, 17:09:27 »
On the front of the right hand casing there is a grub screw. Does any body know what it is for. I cant find it on the parts list.
I unscrewed it revealing what looks like a an oil way leading to the back of the oil pump area there is nothing in it should there be a ball with a spring or something. The engine is currently in a semi dismantled state. Is it something to do with the oil pump.
I have been reading about the oil system to the rocker boxes and the lubrication problems. If there is high pressure oil behind this grub screw it may be possible to put a small diameter reducer in place of the grub screw and feed oil to the rocker boxes that way, the oil can return back down the rocker pushrod tubes. or maybe not![/img]

I think the screw is simply a blanking plug.
The problem with oil to the rockers seems to be the only thing that people know about Beagles!
The issue lies with the fact that the rocker boxes are sealed so pressure in them resists the flow of the oil mist up to them. Simple breathers of some description are likely to solve the problem (if it is one). To prove this to yourself, leave the rocker 'lids' slightly open when you get the engine running.
Have fun, its an interesting machine.
PS when it comes to timing valves etc remember the engine runs 'backwards'. Forgetting this wasted half a day of my life :-[

i Dean.  Thanks for your reply. I was thinking about the rotation yep looking at the clutch it turns anticlockwise therefore the crankshaft turns clockwise.
I had a beagle about 40 years ago, didn't know anything about it mechanically. didn't use it for any long journeys never had any problems with it. sold it because I was bored with overtaking everything on the road.
I am waiting for the a primary drive cog washer and nut. when I get them on and the engine running I will look into the oil thing.
any Idea where I can get a gasket set from. (i will probably make my own). The cover for the magneto is missing   at least all the frame parts are there.
If I can't get the engine to run I can always put an electric bike wheel on the back and go all green.
Cheers robbie

As I recall the mag cover is oval so the sawn down and posished saucepan might not work. Probably not hard to get one made.
Remind me to check if I have a gasket set. Mind you they get brittle so maybe better making your own.

I make  musical instruments as a hobby so I have decided to have a go at making one out of wood.  The picture is of a strip of maple steamed and bent to shape using my wood bending iron. After a couple of days it will be dry enough to glue. then put a top on it, fill and sand it to shape. then spray it with metal paint. Job done
