Golden Flash charging
« on: 16 March, 2023, 20:27:24 »
Hi all, I have recently purchased a 1955 Golden Flash and I am having a little trouble with charging. The bike currently has a Wassel type regulator fit and I get no charge at the battery or on the ammeter. I have checked the output from the dynamo and this is fine to me and the bike has a SRM belt drive on it. There are plenty volts when checked with the multimeter.
If I fit a DVR2 would it be better to keep at 6volt or change everything to 12 volt system.
Thanks for looking

The Wassell regulator does not appear to have a very good reputation and it sounds as though it has failed in this case.

I'm not an expert on dynamo/regulator systems but, as far as I understand them, switching to a 12V regulator means that you will need to reach much higher engine revs before the voltage gets high enough for the regulator to kick in and start to charge the battery. In contrast, a 6V regulator will kick in at just over 1000 rpm. Therefore, if you run the bike at low revs for some time, the battery may not get charged.

I would recommend the DVR2 installed to give 12v. They also suppy a drive to increase dynamo revs and therefore output.

I would recomend using a reg from AO services.
I have fitted loads to customers bikes.

I have fit the dvr2 and it is just the same. Plenty of volts from the dynamo when connecting the green and yellow wire and checking to earth. It has a sealed type battery that shows 5.8 volts and does not go up when revving the bike, no output from the dvr2 purple lead and shows nothing on the ammeter. Guess I will just have to use it in daylight. There's other things I need to sort out first, namely the atrocious running faults. Spitting back through the card, back firing and rough idle to name a few. Thought I was doing the right thing buying one with supposedly all the work done, would have been better doing another full restoration at this rate.

I assume the DRV2 is connected up for 6V operation. I'm not sure whether the wire colours are different in your case but, in the DRV2 instructions I can find, the brown and white wires must be connected together for 6V. When you say purple wire, I assume this is the same as the brown wire in my set of instructions which corresponds to the old A Terminal?

As with most regulators, there is relatively little that can be tested and it either works or it doesn't. However, for the DRV2, I would measure the voltage generated between the earth and the yellow (D) and the same for the green wire (F) when the engine is revved. When the voltage reaches at least 6.3V or so on each, the voltage should appear on the brown (or is it purple) wire which I would disconnect from the battery during the test.

Providing the DRV2 is wired correctly and the battery is in good condition, the regulator should work as intended unless there is a fault with the dynamo which does not appear to be the case. The one thing that can cause the regulator not to work is if it is not properly earthed to the dynamo and it would therefore worth checking the resistance between the DRV2 earth wire and the dynamo earth.

Many thanks for all the things to check. I stripped and cleaned the dynamo and reflashed it, checked continuity on all the wiring and connections. It is now charging well showing good on the ammeter and charge at the battery.
Another good learning curve to help being self sufficient with the maintenance on this machine.
