hiya all

I want to use a timing wheel on the end of the crank but there is only the centering hole in the
crank end, would it be ok if I drill out the crank end and tap it to about 6mm ish so i can fix the
timing wheel on there. I wouldn't go too deep, maybe 1/2"

I may be completely wrong but I would expect the heat treated steel used in the crankshaft to be too hard to drill and tap. If you could, it's unlikely that such a small hole would cause a problem but it would be useful to know what the bike is we are talking about?

Get a small magnet and hold the timing disc onto the end of the crankshaft using the magnet.

That's a good tip. Why didn't I think of that?  :)

yes a good idea, thanks.
I have drilled a little to see how hard it is, not that bad actually so i suspect it is just case hardened.
I will drill and tap it as I can't see any harm. its a B33

Have you seen the U tube film B31/33 Goldstar Thorspark ignition timing. The engine shock absorber is drilled and suitable plate made, can vouch for the method, i bought the bike!

Tip from my model engineering friends - stick it on with superglue & use a hairdryer/hot air gun to release it

Thank you everyone, I didn't finish drilling the crank as a really good rare earth magnet  to hold the
timing wheel worked just fine.
thanks to idie , feel free to take last Thursday off as a reward :-)
