A65 Rear Brake Plates

Greetings

I am just settin out on a rebuild/resto 1966 A65TA. I have a minor problem with rear brake plates.

Early model plate 68-6020 for right hand side of wheel, I have two.

Later model plate 68-6130 for Left hand side of wheel, I dont have.

The casting diferences between the two are obvious. I have offerred up a complete early plate and it seems OK. dimensions etc fine. I can weld up the extra hole.

So my Q is. Does anyone know if there will be a problem area that is not obvious to me. Or would anyone have a good swappable. I'll pay postage both ways

Hi Mike,

Are you referring to the A10 type as the right hand one?  The earlier left hand QD hub is steel and the later one cast aluminium.

I believe so but cant really answer that cos I cant recall last A10. However its the one listed as A50/65 up to late 65/66. The brake had the cross over shaft and all the gubbins on the RHS.

As opposed to the later splined drive with all the bits on the LHS. Both plates are same dimensions but the earlier one had three holes. Brake actuator, and brake pivot point and brake anchor (A la A10 } The later one has only two holes--Actuator and combined brake pivot/anchor point.

I cant see any reason to not fit it, but looking for thoughts before spending money.

Hi Mike,

In truth I have never directly compared these two brake plates but from memory they are quite different and I suspect that they were never machined to the same dimensions such as to be virtually interchangeable.
However, if you have found that it will fit without any problem then why not give it a go.  I would try a dry run with the plate assembled in a hub and fitted in the swinging arm and fully tightened ensuring that the centre boss is sitting against the wheel bearing.
It will be interesting to see the outcome with photos.

Those are my thoughts and in truth all I have to do is put my recently rebuilt back plate in place and do as you say. We shall see what we shall see. Its quite possible that a 7" front plate would fit with the slotted anchor stops removed.

The plate on the LHS only has two holes anyway. The anchor strap goes onto an extended Brake pivot bolt.

We'll see I guess, when it gets warmer again.
