A65 fuel tanks
« on: 10 September, 2022, 21:36:46 »
 :) :) :) :)

Hi guys, I am considering fitting the later OIF tank onto a 1964 bike. Two bikes in progress but only one tank of correct age. Doing it wont be a serious problem but I would appreciate any input from someone who's "done that".

Apart from the central bolt, isn't the mounting arrangement for the two types of tank completely different? The OIF tank doesn't have the threaded holes for the front mounting bracket for the 1964 frame and is also expecting the 4 x mounting rubbers that keep it stable on the OIF frame?

Probably. Thats why I'm asking if anyone has done it. Save me casting around for my own answers. At worst I shall have braze some blind inserts in, but thats not a problem.

Just looking a bit closer at the OIF petrol tank, doesn't it come with the tapped inserts to take a fixing bracket at the front?

I am aware that I have to come up with a new fixing system. A good start point would be to know the distance from the bottom of the tank to the top of a spark plug minus cap.

If anyone is able to give me that info I should be very much obliged.

At the moment I am thinking about the old Ariel??? system which casting my mind back to about 1958/9 was four rubber cushions. But thats a bit foggy. I have probably aged since then. Amazing I know it was a 500 twin but cant remember type. Yet I can recall the reg No
